Puppy Socialization Beginner Obedience Advanced Beginner Intro to Agility

Class Schedule and Registration

The Obedience Center, originally part of THE PALATINE CANINE CENTER has been serving this area for almost twenty years. Our goal has always been to provide the area with top quality training techniques, knowledgeable instructors, and most importantly, to help you raise a dog you can live with.

All of our classes are held indoors; the building is heated, air-conditioned, well lit and fully matted. (Not on slippery tile floors, as in retail stores)  We limit our puppy class to 20 dogs and our beginner class to 18 dogs.  We encourage family participation and welcome well behaved children who are mature enough to take the class seriously. Depending on the size of the class we have an instructor and an assistant for each class

Our training is built on positive reinforcement. Dogs learn faster this way and their owners prefer this to harsh training methods. However, negative reinforcements are occasionally needed on dogs that do not respond to positive reinforcement.

Our obedience courses are designed for practical training, not the show ring.. Most dog training classes only teach obedience commands. Our classes differ in that we cover things of specific interest to the pet owner. Like how to stop a dog from jumping on people; stop him from running out the door; how to keep him off furniture. We help you with housebreaking and chewing problems. We explain how to recognize whether you have a dominant or subordinate dog, and the training methods which will get the best results for each. We discuss what is appropriate or inappropriate behavior during the different stages of the dog's development. Why repetition, timing and consistency is so important in the training process. It's a lot easier to train your dog if you understand why he's doing certain things. Often prevention is better than cure, and our training looks at prevention as a smart alternative. We also have question and answer sessions throughout the course, so if you're having any problems not related to the class, they can be discussed. Owners are often relieved to learn that their dog is not the only one digging in the yard! Like other obedience classes we also teach the basic commands of heel, sit, stay and come.

If you're trying to decide on which class in the area to attend with your dog, compare the difference  by finding out exactly what topics are covered, and the experience of the instructors. You'll be amazed to find how many trainers have only limited experience, and some of them have never raised a dog from puppy hood.
